25 pounder...my plans.

Post by Phil Woollard » Sat Aug 12, 2017 9:23 am

I suppose that I ought to post any progress and photos of the 25 pounder. Although not technically a build it might be of interest to some.
My plans are to paint probably in parade bronze green and pillar box red, but I may initially depict a desert camo scheme as I have plans for an el Alamein photo shoot sometime (be a good undercoat and many examples would have had just that before being painted in parade colours)..who knows?

Been polishing the 25 pounder and whilst taking the breach apart found a snapped off m3 tap deep into the barrel, that thread used to hold part of the forward breach, now I could have rang Monique and demanded a new barrel but oh no I like a challenge.
If anyone has ever tried to remove a broken tap then you know if it's not loose then it is almost impossible, and the chances are that the tap has bottomed out and snapped off tight.
Here's how I did it.
Firstly drill a suitable size hole parallel to the broken tap, just far enough away so that you don't destroy the drill bit, then with a small hard punch drive the broken tap through the new hole side wall that you have drilled , this can take a while.Remove all traces of the tap!
Then... see below.

I have already milled a 10 mm hole positioned to remove the 2 unwanted holes. Then cut a plug to fit tightly, swaging the end so that it's a very tight fit, hammer home gently but firmly. Use a very similar material for the plug.

You can just see the plug poking through the bore in this pic.

Using a flat bottom drill the same diameter as the barrel bore to remove the plug protrusion.

Turning off the protruding plug using tiny increments

Turned off flush.

Polished with emery paper and should be totally invisible.

Drilled and tapped and altogether, no one would ever know! Except everyone that reads this.

For some reason I can't load more than one photo at a time, so here's another.
