Steam distilatte

Post by duncanallender » Fri Apr 17, 2020 12:38 pm

Hi there ,
I am after some steam distilatte for me tanks. Any of you can recommend a particular type and where to source it from. I have used diesel in the past, which gives a good odour, and steam , but gets a bit oily/claggy.
Cheers

Liquid paraffin gives plenty of smoke but its not the most appetising odour, baby oil also works well and has a pleasant odour.

If this is for a heating element type smoker, use eliquid or vape juice. Don't buy it made up, it's costly and smelly and you may get more than you bargained for. It's easy and cheap to make up yourself.

You'll need two liquids, which you can get online:

PG - propylene glycol. PG is a thinner liquid and heats up fast but doesn't produce a large volume of vapour
VG- vegetable glycerine. VG is thicker, sticky, slower to heat up but produces a denser vapour.

A combination of the two is ideal. You can experiment with the proportions. More VG and you get more vapour but the smoker is more prone to gunk building up. More PG and the smoker remains cleaner but smokes less.

I'd recommend a 30/70 ratio by volume of PG/VG respectively.

You can mix up a bottle full to replenish. You will find it a bit sticky to handle when made up so avoid spillages. It should be almost odourless.

Eliquid produces a white smoke. I've not experimented with trying to alter the colour but I'm sure if there are any Breaking Bad scientists out there, a method will emerge.

I'll take my hat off to my local vape shop. I had to wait until there were no other customers and then sneak in and pull out a photo of my Armortek kit. I got a very strange look at first, rather as if I'd asked for something "special" from under the counter. Once they understood what was required, they couldn't have been more helpful. They sorted me out with a "vape box" and all the other gear to make up my barrel smoker and in the process sent away other customers who merely wanted to vape. I've had to go back and show them the results. They even told not to bother with commercial vape juice and showed me how to go about making my own. So, hats off to the vape blokes of Dorset.

Thanks Mark and Stephen.
Think I'll give the vape juice a go, looks interesting.
