Re: Vince's Tiger 1 late variant 2017

Thanks Stephen for a very comprehensive reply.

Note that the RAL standard changed post war, so you can't directly translate from the wartime standards to the contemporary.
When you mentioned for example "Dunkelgelb RAL 7028"; is that RAL number a contemporary number?

Re: Vince's Tiger 1 late variant 2017

Haven't done anything on the tank as I have been slowly working on the four bump stops. Lots of fiddly operations on a relatively small part. In fact today decided to take a break and run some errands. The good news is that finally I managed to find a source for the U-Pol acid/etch primer. I have be...

Re: Vince's Tiger 1 late variant 2017

Finished the drawings for the rectangular access panel and pannier gusset and took them and a couple of .dxf files to the laser cutter. Still waiting for a quote from them. Received Loctite 638 which I got from the UK as it is not available here. Started test fitting the suspension components. Debur...

Re: Vince's Tiger 1 late variant 2017

Finished the four shock absorber mounts which should be correct for a late version Tiger. 18mm diameter and 4.5mm thick with a decent rounded edge. Tiger 017.JPG I could have marked the positions on the hull for future drilling but I realised that I left my laptop which has all the information at ho...

Re: Vince's Tiger 1 late variant 2017

Thank you Adrian. Actually that helped a lot with the high resolution photos where one can really zoom in. I am going to make the diameter of the mount 18mm instead of 22mm. The 22mm one in my untrained eyes looked too big. 18mm should be better. I also noticed that there is a difference in the shap...

Re: Vince's Tiger 1 late variant 2017

I am making the shock absorber mounts but am not sure about the diameter. I estimated it to be around 22mm in 1/6 scale. Does anybody know what it should be? Even a full size diameter would help.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Vince's Tiger 1 late variant 2017

Nothing special. Just a hobby lathe and mill. I made that pin from 316 stainless because that was what I found in my "left over" pile. Most probably if I had brass of the correct diameter I would have used that. I don't mind working with stainless. The three most common types of stainless are 303, 3...

Re: Vince's Tiger 1 late variant 2017

Thanks Adrian.

It's good to have somebody looking over my newbie (first metal tank) shoulders.

Re: Vince's Tiger 1 late variant 2017

Did a modification on the tow bracket. At first I was going to do it from scratch but then decided to use the kit part and just add the lower part. At the moment it is glued together with JBweld but I don't know how much it will last. I will be happy if it remains together until I mark the lower hol...

Re: Preparing for Tiger 1 late variant build

Glen

In my humble opinion, carving it out of one piece is possible but difficult, unless your friend has got CNC capability, then it's another story. If your friend has CAD I can send you a .dxf file.

Re: Preparing for Tiger 1 late variant build

Glen, the main body of the bump stop is made of aluminium but when I will be redoing them I will make them from brass. Brass is a little stronger than aluminium and also easier to join pieces together with soft solder or silver solder. I could make a step by step build log of the bumpstop but this i...

Re: Vince's Tiger 1 late variant 2017

Today I finished a prototype bump stop I had started some time ago. It may take some time, but I have decided to do four of them to replace the kit supplied parts. I think they look better.

Re: Preparing for Tiger 1 late variant build

Finished the rubber part of the bump stop. Cut it from 12mm thick rubber sheet. I would have preferred 15mm thickness but could not find it locally.

I am comparing it to the Armortek bump stop. I think I have the scale correct.

Re: Vince's Tiger 1 late variant 2017

As this is a June 1944 Tiger 1 it has the small idler wheel and the track deflector should be slightly angled downwards. I could not find the actual angle so I eyeballed it with some photos I found. Could somebody tell me if the angle looks good. Tiger 008.JPG Tiger 009.JPG Tiger 010.JPG Tiger 011.J...

Re: Vince's Tiger 1 late variant 2017

Thanks Adrian for the comments and tips. I don't think I will be going into high level detailing. Just normal detailing to give it a personal touch. I have gone through most of the build logs that I could find and am in awe at the level achieved. I will not be able to get mine to that level but I wi...
