The Model

Following the success of our “big cats” in the form of the Tiger I and Panther Ausf G we turned our thoughts to a model that would meet the following criteria:
  • Affordable
  • Well known
  • Fun to drive
  • Interesting to model
  • Easy to construct
  • Able to carry at least two 12” figures
  • Complementary to existing models
  • Loyal to Armortek’s design philosophy of authentic engineering and scale armour thickness.

After considerable debate we decided that the SdKfz 222 armoured car was the perfect candidate. Here was a vehicle that was produced in large numbers for the Wehrmacht and one that served from the beginning to the end of the Second World War.

As the standard reconnaissance vehicle of the German army the SdKfz 222 can be modelled to represent any vehicle from the early days of Blitzkrieg in France and Poland 1939/40, the North African desert campaign under Rommel, through to the Russian Front and late war Normandy.

The SdKfz 222 was attached to the Panzer Divisions and carried out scouting duties for the heavy armour as well as mobile infantry and artillery. So you have an almost unlimited choice of regiment, location, colour schemes and insignia. You’ll have fun researching the options and customising your model to make it one of a kind.

Although this model is one third the cost of our Panther and Tiger models there is no change in our philosophy of authentic engineering and scale armour plate thickness. As far as is practical we strive to provide you with a 1/6th scale version of the real thing. Not only does the model need to look right, but also to feel and move like the full size vehicle. To this end you will find the vehicle has a separate chassis, independent coil spring suspension, four wheel steering, four wheel drive and armour plate thickness between 1mm-3mm. The majority of the model is constructed in steel and aluminium to provide the weight and durability that Armortek is renowned for. With a scale speed of 8mph + this is something the less careful drivers amongst you may be grateful for!

Over the past years our experience in producing large scale all metal models has led to the employment of new techniques to enhance the detail and high quality finish of our kits. The SdKfz 222 is the beneficiary of this accumulated knowledge. Not only does this kit offer a straightforward assembly, but it also offers an improved level of detail. Tyres are in moulded rubber (with correct tread pattern) and detail extends to the inclusion of a spare wheel to mount on the right hand side of the hull. Also there is a brass photo-etched anti-grenade wire mesh to attach to the top of the open turret and this is hinged to allow it to be folded down when not required.

Inside the turret you will find a well detailed version of the standard 20mm KwK 30 cannon (with working elevation -4 to +87 degrees) and 7.92 MG34 machine gun mount. Of course, with access to the model through the opening hatches there is room for a 12” action figure, or two, to add that extra bit of authenticity (perhaps even a young Michael Wittmann in his pre-Tiger Ace days!).

The full size vehicle carried a crew of three and measured some 4.8 metres in length and was approximately 2 metres high. Although of modest proportions the vehicle’s armour of 5mm – 14.5mm produced an all up weight of 4.8 tons. In spite of this the SdKfz 222 was a sprightly performer due to its Hortch/Auto-Union V8 -108 petrol engine that provided 81 hp. Its 50mph speed and four wheel drive generally getting it out of the way of any enemy powerful enough to resist its armour piercing, 280 rounds per minute, KwK 30 cannon. Our model measures approximately 764mm long x 327mm wide x 338mm high and comes in near to scale weight at circa 20kg-25kg.

Thus it can fit into any small sized car and can be lifted easily by the individual (This will offer some respite for hard worked Tiger owner!).

In common with our larger models the kit is presented fully-machined for a straightforward bolt-together assembly. There is no drilling, tapping, metal cutting, or forming required. The model is organised in three kit stages to provide a logical build sequence and is delivered to you complete in a single consignment. The kit comes complete with fasteners and full assembly instructions supported by illustrations.

The SdKfz 222 is the ideal starter kit for those seeking an easy and affordable introduction into authentically engineered all metal AFV’s. Equally our more experienced customers will surely welcome this model as a worthy addition to their collection. Any Tiger, or Panther, tank commander would certainly appreciate the help of a SdKfz 222 scouting for anti-tank guns and targets as a preliminary to any advance.

For those looking to enhance their enjoyment of the model we can offer a number of additional options. The basic fully machined kit assembles into fine showcase model for static display. Of course, Armortek models are specifically engineered to run outdoors over the toughest of terrain. To this end we are happy to supply motors and electronics to get you up and running. For the ultimate in realism a sound unit and smoke generator are also available. (See “Options” page for more details).

We are confident that the SdKfz 222 offers the highest achievable quality at an affordable price and should prove very popular with those new to 1/6th scale modelling and established customers alike. However, from a marketing perspective, the introduction of such a model is something of an unknown quantity. Thus it will initially be produced in relatively small numbers. We have limited production capacity between the completion of the Panther kits and starting manufacture of the Tiger I early in 2007 and it will be this window of opportunity that will be used to manufacture the SdKfz 222 kits.

To help us gauge response, and plan production as efficiently as possible, we are now inviting prospective customers for the 222 to reserve their model with a deposit of just £195.00. Orders will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. As soon as we approach our production limits we will close the order book without further notice. This may happen within the month, but almost certainly within three. In any event, to avoid disappointment, may we politely suggest that you confirm your order within the next 28 days.
