The element was on all the time, so it was usual to add another switch to save battery power if you wanted to run with no smoke. The element is 24 volt, 48 watts, so takes 2 amps all the time it is connected.
The fan was connected to one of the track motor outputs, so only ran when that track was moving forwards. The fans don't operate when the power is reversed, which is handy as they'd then suck the smoke into the insides of the tank
