milling machine and sherman

Postby Dale jordan » Mon Jul 28, 2008 11:37 pm

I'm realy happy, yesterday I brought my first milling machine . It's only a mini mill . The price was good $ 540.00 AUS dollars brand new in the box . I think for 1/6 scale modeling it should do me . The only thing is i should have done this three years ago . It's funny I just spent the same amount on my sound unit for my tiger . I can see more value in the mill !!! anyway I'm happy both ways . I just need a new armortek kit ... Dale

That certainly sounds like a good price :D

I'm still using my drill press as a mill but I made the mistake of buying the cheapest drill I could find and it really isn't rigid or accurate enough to make precision parts

Has the mill purchase brought on any ideas for new improvements :?:

Adrian I'm not shore as to what I will do one the sherman as per milling . It would have been great to do all the running gear mods that I did on the sherman . Like you I used My drill press and I think I ended up wrecking it .

Dale,

It looks to be a versatile mill f you can also tilt the head. As Sean says you need to get a good machine vice and a set of Tee bolts and clamps to hold those awkward tank shaped bits. Also any milling cuters you can get your hands on. Try few trips to boot fares as we call them, general bench tools go pretty fast but things like taps, dies and milling cutters being pretty specialised still go for reasonable prices.

Thanks Allan and Sean . Yes I have all the good stuff to go with the Mill and the head Allan will angle from side to side . I'm lucky having Noel living near me , to paint and weather my tanks . I also have a friend who is as good as Noel ..... But , Ron builds the best machined engines and models so he is going to teach me on the Mill ....Dale

Dale,

So let me get this straight. Your Tiger I was completed without a mill and turned out the way it did. Now your Sherman will be built with a mill to use for neat parts?

I can only imagine how nice it will turn out. :D

Congratulations on the new, handy tool.

Cheers
