Steve,

Main nuts are 3mm and hub cap bolts are 8BA with a 9BA head.

Done the 'dry' pre-build of the turret to get everything to fit nicely.

Running gear fitted and I've had it running around (indoors), seems good so far, fast and smooth.
Coming along well as I continue with fitting all the various bits and detailing.

Its coming along. Located all the electrical parts, just now need to make a few brackets to finally secure them. Then a final base coat and the hull will be ready for Armorpax details.

Dennis,

My preference is to use cellulose for a number of reasons, and I use it as the base colour(s) on all my large scale models. This is BS298 British Olive Drab satin. Other people will have their own preferences.

Johns Comet

Post by phil fitzpatrick » Wed Nov 03, 2010 2:17 pm

Hi John
You have a great looking Comet and your details.
Did you find that your gun wouldnt close down shut with the barrel in
before you added your fastening detail and does it lock shut now?
Cheers
Phil

Phil,

The travel lock wouldn't bolt down tight because the hexagon shape is smaller than the barrel diameter. From what pictures I've seen that is also true of the real thing and it just clamps on the barrel without coming all the way down.
My modified one now also behaves like that and does now clamp round the barrel.

Gun Crutch

Post by phil fitzpatrick » Wed Nov 03, 2010 5:34 pm

Thanks John
Thats what was throwing me,because the photo's in the armor photgallery
looked straightish, but there was a long thread on the clamp fastener, and I think the left hand leg of the clamp might have been longer at least as long as the bottom angle bit of the crutch.
Another one for my list,I've just bought a 100 watt bulb for my spare bed
room now the nights are darker quicker and the clocks have gone back,
they have pinched my Tank time.
Cheers
Phil

Hello John, is it possible to 'purchase' ready cut, those nuts you have used on your drive sprocket end caps....or have you cut/made them yourself?...and what size are they....?

Great build,your photo's are very useful...Mick

Mick,

I made up some plain caps to cover the sprocket hub/bolt and they are secured with the small (visible) bolts.
I have found it difficult to get hex bolts/setscrews smaller an 2.5mm so use BA sizes for these. I think the ones I used here were 10BA.

Mick,

I have been on the bearing cap cover securing set screw case only this morning. I am using 10BA threaded set screws with 11BA heads. The slightly smaller head appears to be a reasonable proportion to the cap and importantly would if scaled up to full size allow a socket spanner to be fitted. I have had to trim down the length and had glued them into the bearing caps after slightly countersinking the hole from the underside.

Check out www.modern-screws.co.uk. I cannot actually find the screws I bought this morning in their website, better to give them a call on 013322 553224. It is a goldmine of fastenings and if they haven’t got something they say that they will have a go at finding it.

Hope this helps.
Paul
